Our ethics policy

Research ethics

Part of the BGI Nexus project is aimed at collecting input and wisdom from the general population about their values on AI ethics and safety. This means collecting potentially sensitive data about their opinions and contact information if they choose to be contacted later, either on surveys or through recorded interviews (and later, through our chatbot, which is part of our longer term strategy).

In ethical research, it's important to be clear about how we handle that data; who has access to it; what it's being used for - and have that information available to anyone, especially people who have contributed their valued opinions and wisdom. That information is central to informed consent.

What information do we collect?

We collect information through surveys and interviews (sometimes one to one, sometimes in groups, online and in person). We also plan to put a conversational AI on this website, which you will be able to talk to about AI ethics.

Why do we collect it?

What do we do with it?

Anonymity

We don't ever link participants' answers to them personally when reporting. Only a small number of people has access to identifiable datasets. These are the project runners. Most people who access the dataset (for example the spreadsheet with the survey results in it) can only see the anonymised data, with personal information stripped out. We won't identify people personally in any reports. If we want to do that, we will always contact them to ask for permission first.
